Church prepares for annual gyro sale

STEUBENVILLE — The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church will be having its annual gyro sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 12. The church is located at 300 S. Fourth St.

Those ordering should allow a minimum of 20 minutes for all orders, according to organizers. Free delivery will be made available to businesses or parishoners who order four or more gyros.

The cost of a gyro is $9. Grape leaves will be sold three for $3.50 and baklava is $3 each.

Tyropitas are $3.50 and melamakaronas will be $2.50 apiece, officials noted.

Special play offered for pre-schoolers

WELLSBURG — Parents and guardians of children age 6 and under are invited to bring their children to the Brooke County Public Library between 10:30 a.m. and noon each Saturday so they may use toys and games designed to promote hand-eye coordination and a basic understanding of science, engineering, art and math concepts.

Parents are encouraged to assist the children with the toys, which are set up and taken down by a volunteer.

Day care to hold celebration

WEIRTON — The Weirton Heights Day Care Center in Weirton has completed a summer reading challenge sponsored through Save the Children and West Virginia Association for Young Children.

Officials will hold a small celebration beginning at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. It will take place at the center, located at 1471 Cove Road.

The event will feature a visit from the Cat in the Hat character who will be riding in a convertible and reading to the children.

The center will be presented with a giant check in the amount of $1,500.

Edison to hold special meeting

RICHMOND — The Edison Local Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 3 p.m. Sept. 8 in the conference room of the Edison High School Field House.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the employment of a public employee/official.

Library plans ice cream social

WEIRTON — The Mary H. Weir Public Library will hold an ice cream social event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8. The Nikki Jagela, and I am the Children’s Librarian Nikki Jagela explained officials will be making homemade ice cream on the main floor of the library and the community is invited to attend.

Jagela stated this will be a fun event for both children and adults. No registration is required but officials did say to attend early to ensure you receive a scoop of ice cream.

Volunteers are needed to churn the ice cream, Jagela said. Anyone who can help is asked to contact her at (304) 797-8510.

Change in meeting date

WINTERSVILLE — The Cross Creek Township meeting of the Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at 1267 Cadiz Road. The meeting had been scheduled for Monday, but had to be changed due to Labor Day, officials stated.

Stock the Pantry

STEUBENVILLE — As part of the local effort being made for American Recycles Day, a special paper recycling event entitled Stock the Pantry has been planned and will simultaneously provide the opportunity for everyone to do their part for local pantries. The community is asked to donate their paper and flattened cardboard and place it inside a blue recycling container that will be set up at the Fort Steuben Mall.

The event will take place in the parking area in front of J.C. Penney, officials noted.

The container will remain at the mall from Sept. 7 through Nov. 17.

“This is a perfect opportunity to help us remove even more paper from the solid waste stream and all proceeds generated from the blue trailer for Stock the Pantry goes to local food pantries this holiday season,” officials stated, adding to make sure to break down any boxes prior to placing them into the bin in order to save space for others.

When it comes to throwing items into the recycling bin, make sure to follow these guidelines: Paper items including newspapers, junk mail, cereal boxes, magazines and books; place all shredded paper into a box or paper bag; place all other paper items loose into the container; and remember items soiled with food cannot be recycled.

America Recycles Day is a national program. It is the only nationally-recognized day which brings an awareness to this event, according to officials.

Since its inception in 1997, communities across the country have participated in America Recycles Day on Nov. 15 to educate, promote environmental citizenship and encourage action.

Cornhole tournament set

FOLLANSBEE — The Follansbee American Legion Post will hold a cornhole tournament Sept. 16 at the Follansbee Community House.

Registration for the double elimination event is $25 per team, with no more than two pro-members permitted on one team.
